Catfish and Sturgeon fishing below Lower Granite Dam on the Snake River
This early spring fishery is known mainly by the locals and receives limited fishing pressure.
Lake Bryan is open to harvest of Sturgeon within the size slot...and catfish is open year round. The fishing begins in early February and is good throughout the summer months. We have been seeing an increase in large fish in this area for the past couple of years.

Catfish/sturgeon. More information on this fishery
Lake Bryan has a large population of Channel and Blue catfish. These fish become active around the end of March with excellent fishing through the months of April, May and June. It is late June to mid July that the spawn occurs and fishing slows down dramatically. Fishing then picks up by mid July to the first of August.
Average fish size is in the 3-7 pound range with an occasional larger fish.
This same area also has a fishable population of sturgeon and is open to harvest of specimens within the size slot. There is some fishing close to the dam that occurs in the spring, this is in conjunction with smolt travel. This impoundment has other stable food sources that draw these fish throughout the season.
Having fished this entire stretch of water for many years we have determined that Catfish and Sturgeon generally do not co-habit the same areas and they have differing bait preferences. Our fishing is adjusted accordingly.
We prefer to fish Sturgeon and Catfish in the spring and summer months due to their active feeding behaviors. Unlike many other areas the daytime hours produce good numbers of cats.

Informative Articles:
Sturgeon of this size are not uncommon in the lower reservoirs. When the upper Hells Canyon is un-fishable in the spring months these lower areas can produce some nice fishing.
There is an adequate population of fish within the size slot to have a retention size and season. Catching one in this slot is strictly dependent on being in the right place at the right time, but the fishing experience is still enjoyable with or without harvest.
